Ciryl Gane

Gane is a licence-gap fighter: he debuted in the UFC in August 2019, between Topps losing the licence and Panini picking it up, so nothing of his exists before 2021 Panini Prizm UFC #184. Everything from his first card to his first autograph was compressed into nine months of 2021 - Prizm in April, the Select autographs in July, Chronicles and its Rated Rookie in October - which makes his rookie question a question about which of those Panini issues counts. Topps only reached him in 2024, by which time he was a former interim champion rather than a prospect.

2021 Panini Prizm UFC #184

Panini's first UFC release of the licence era, out 28 April 2021, and the earliest Gane card located anywhere: he had fought four times in the UFC by then but the Topps licence had lapsed before he arrived, so nothing exists from 2019 or 2020. He sits at #184 in the horizontal half of the 200-card base set, four months before the Derrick Lewis win made him interim champion.

Where sources disagree

No source consulted states outright which Gane card is 'the' rookie. eBay's catalogue marks the Prizm, Select and Chronicles cards all (RC); SportsCardsPro's rookie field reads 'No' on every Gane card checked, including Prizm #184; Panini's own printed rookie logo is on the Chronicles Rated Rookie alone. The Prizm pick here rests on release date plus seller consensus, not on a stated designation.

Commonly misidentified

Sellers list the Prizm #184 Silver, Scope and coloured parallels simply as 'the rookie', and Instant #28/#29 get tagged 'RC' because their low numbers look early - they are August 2021 commemoratives. TCDB, which would normally settle the RC flag, could not be reached.

Card history

Gane fought four times in the UFC, the Junior dos Santos win included, before a single card of him existed. He arrived in August 2019, after Topps' UFC licence had lapsed and before Panini's began, so his cardboard starts cold at 2021 Panini Prizm UFC #184, released 28 April 2021. He sits in the horizontal half of the 200-card base set, with the full Prizm parallel ladder behind him - Red /275, Blue /199, Purple /149, Orange /99 and on down to Gold /10, Octagon /8 and Black 1/1.

Which of his 2021 Panini cards is the rookie is genuinely unsettled. eBay's catalogue marks the Prizm, Select and Chronicles cards all (RC); SportsCardsPro's rookie field reads 'No' on every Gane card, Prizm #184 included; and the only printed Panini rookie designation he has is on Chronicles UFC Donruss Rated Rookie #28, which did not appear until 6 October 2021. The case for Prizm #184 is that it came first by five months, not that any checklist says so.

The rest of his first year came fast. Select UFC on 30 July 2021 put him in all three base tiers - Concourse #98, Premier Level #180 and the scarcer Octagonside #300 - and carried his first certified autographs, Rookie Signatures #10 and Octagon Action Signatures #32, both numbered to 149; Prizm had contained no Gane signature at all. Panini Instant #28 and #29 marked the UFC 265 interim-title win over Derrick Lewis that August, print-to-order and on sale for days only, and Chronicles UFC in October ran him through a dozen Panini brand designs with six autographs, among them the tricolour National Pride Signatures #27.

Panini's last two years with him are quieter. 2022 Prizm UFC #101, out 25 March 2022, is the first base card that shows him as a former interim champion rather than a contender, two months after the Ngannou loss, and it brought Fireworks #12 and Prizm Flashback #16 with it. The premium lines kept signing him into 2023, down to an Immaculate UFC memorabilia autograph on acetate numbered to 6.

Topps took the licence back and reached him at last with 2024 Topps Chrome UFC #47 on 20 March 2024 - his first Topps card of any kind, five years after his UFC debut, with Supergiant SUG-1, Tale of the Tape TFT-4 and Allen & Ginter AAG-7 alongside it and refractors running to a SuperFractor 1/1. 2025 Topps Chrome UFC, out 27 June 2025, gives him base #33 and nothing else: no insert, no autograph, one card for the year.

No cardboard

Four UFC fights, including the Junior dos Santos win, and not a single card: Topps' UFC deal had ended and Panini's had not started. Anything dated before 2021 with Gane on it is not a licensed card.

Prizm UFC arrives

Panini's 28 April 2021 Prizm UFC release gave him base #184, the earliest Gane card anywhere. He fought Derrick Lewis for the interim title three months later.

Select UFC, out 30 July 2021, carried his first certified autographs: Rookie Signatures #10 and Octagon Action Signatures #32, both numbered to 149. Prizm UFC had contained no Gane autograph at all.

Chronicles UFC on 6 October 2021 ran him through a dozen brands and put the only printed rookie logo he has on Donruss Rated Rookie #28, plus six autographs including National Pride Signatures #27.

Panini Instant #28 and #29 marked the UFC 265 win over Lewis. Print-to-order and sold for days only, so the populations are tiny compared with anything pack-issued.

2021 Panini Prizm UFC #184 is the earliest Gane card that could be located in any source, licensed or otherwise, and it is the one eBay's catalogue sells as (RC). Cardboard Connection's checklist puts the product at 28 April 2021 and confirms Gane appears only once in it, at base #184 with no autograph. Everything else in his first year came later: Select on 30 July, Chronicles on 6 October, the Instant commemoratives in August. The competing claim is Chronicles Donruss Rated Rookie #28, which is the only Gane card with a printed Panini rookie logo, so collectors who go by logo rather than by date pick that one.
