Collector profile “Bones”

Jon Jones

Jones has no solo rookie card. The accepted RC is 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #101, a debut bout card shared with Andre Gusmao, and the FA-JJ autograph from the same product is his first certified signature. The 2010–2012 Topps and Leaf run holds the headline early Jones cards: Main Event, the flagship 'Bones' variation, Finest Atomic Refractors and low-numbered dual autographs. The 2021 Panini Prizm rainbow is the modern entry point.

Rookie card

2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #101

Jones's only 2009 base card and his recognised rookie. A bout card from the back half of the Round 2 checklist, picturing his UFC debut against André Gusmão at UFC 87 on 9 August 2008. Both fighters are named on the card, which is a common source of listing errors on it.

Commonly misidentified

Some sites and sellers file the rookie under '2009 Topps UFC Round 1' — it is Round 2 #101, and Round 1 has no Jones card. The same-product #FA-JJ autograph is regularly sold as an 'RC auto'; it carries no RC flag. Card Review Club calls that autograph '2009 Topps UFC Knockout' (Knockout did not exist until 2010), and Topps Ripped misnumbers it '#FF-JJ'.

Card history

Jones reached Topps' UFC line within a year of his UFC debut: 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 (released September 30, 2009) has his RC-flagged bout card #101 with Andre Gusmao and his first certified autograph, FA-JJ, including a Red Ink version numbered to 25. The same product has the Ultimate Gear relic (/199) and its autographed version (/25).

His run to the light heavyweight title in 2011 matched the busiest year of the Topps license. That year's Jones cards include the first Finest UFC set (August 31, 2011) with base #83 and chromium autographs, Moment of Truth with a dual autographed mat relic alongside Anderson Silva, Title Shot, and Upper Deck's multi-sport Goodwin Champions. Leaf's unlicensed Metal autographs also date from 2011.

Topps produced UFC cards from 2009 to 2020. Panini's exclusive began with 2021 Panini Prizm UFC on April 28, 2021, and Jones appears there in both the base set and the Color Blast insert.

Fanatics Collectibles announced its UFC deal on January 31, 2024, and 2024 Topps Chrome UFC (#97 for Jones) followed on March 20, 2024. That set started a new Topps chrome run for him after the Panini years.

Verified

Jon Jones's rookie card: 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #101 — Jon Jones / Andre Gusmao.

TCDB flags 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #101 (Jon Jones / Andre Gusmao) as his only RC, and Cardboard Connection, Topps Ripped, Card Review Club, Sports Card Investor and Card Ladder all treat it as his rookie card. It was issued in 2009 and pictures his UFC debut (UFC 87, August 2008). No source disputes which card is the rookie; the problems are mislabels. Some sites and sellers file it under '2009 Topps UFC Round 1' (wrong — it is Round 2 #101), and Card Review Club mislabels the rookie-year autograph as '2009 Topps UFC Knockout'.

Uncertain

2009 Round 2 #101 parallels: Cardboard Connection, Card Review Club and eBay sellers list Onyx /188. TCDB calls the /188 parallel 'Silver' and adds a 'Bronze /88' that no other source confirms for 2009. This is the source of the Onyx /188 vs /88 confusion.
