Why this is the working pick

Cardbase is the only database reached that carries him at all, and it is explicit: 33 cards, of which one is flagged rookie, and the card it names is 1996 BBM Pro Wrestling #103. The date fits — he debuted for UWFi in August 1993 and had his first MMA bout in mid-1996, so a 1996 BBM Pro Wrestling card is the earliest licensed issue that could plausibly exist. It is a pro-wrestling card, not an MMA card, which is the same situation as several pre-Topps MMA legends.

The earliest Sakuraba card documented, and the only one any source calls a rookie. It was printed while he was a UWFi shoot-style wrestler working under Billy Robinson and Yoji Anjo, before the Gracie fights, before PRIDE, and roughly a year before he won the UFC Japan heavyweight tournament. It sits in a 361-card Japanese set alongside Ken Shamrock (#181) and Minoru Suzuki (#169), which is the company his early cardboard keeps.
