Why this is the rookie

1996 BBM Pro Wrestling #103 stands. The single-source worry attached to it has gone: WrestlingTradingCards.com's checklist for the set places him at #103 in its U.W.F. International section, and COMC catalogues the same base card, so the number no longer rests on one database. Cardbase remains the only source that applies the word rookie, and no Japanese set of this period printed a rookie designation, so the claim is that it is his earliest card and the only one anyone calls a rookie — not that a manufacturer said so. Nothing earlier has surfaced anywhere.

The earliest Sakuraba card documented, and the only one any source calls a rookie. BBM released the set on 4 January 1996, in his third year as a U.W.F. International wrestler and months before his first recorded MMA bout — this is a pro-wrestling card of a shoot-style undercard man working under Billy Robinson and Yoji Anjo, years before the Gracie fights and PRIDE. It sits in a 362-card Japanese set alongside Ken Shamrock (#181) and Minoru Suzuki (#169), which is the company his early cardboard keeps.

International section and dates the release 4 January 1996; COMC catalogues the same card as '1996 BBM Pro Wrestling - [Base] #103 - Kazushi Sakuraba'; Cardbase carries it as well. Nothing earlier appears in any index, despite his UWFi wrestling debut in August 1993.
  • 2006First MMA card — The 2006 DSE PRIDE release is the first MMA-licensed product to carry him, ten years after his first card. The card number comes from marketplace cataloguing; no full published checklist for the set is available outside Cardbase, which confirms the set but not this entry.

No earlier pack-issued Sakuraba signature surfaced, though Japanese sets of the 1990s and 2000s are poorly indexed in Western databases, so an earlier BBM certified autograph cannot be ruled out.

Cardbase is the only database reached that carries him at all, and it is explicit: 33 cards, of which one is flagged rookie, and the card it names is 1996 BBM Pro Wrestling #103. The date fits — he debuted for UWFi in August 1993 and had his first MMA bout in mid-1996, so a 1996 BBM Pro Wrestling card is the earliest licensed issue that could plausibly exist. It is a pro-wrestling card, not an MMA card, which is the same situation as several pre-Topps MMA legends.
