Why this is the working pick

2009 Topps UFC Round 1 #60 is Edgar's first card in any licensed set. Topps did not hold the UFC licence before 2009 and no earlier Edgar card of any kind — MMA, wrestling, regional or promo — turned up in any reachable source, so nothing predates it. Jeff Allender's House of Checklists lists it as base #60 'Frankie Edgar - Tyson Griffin', and SportsCardsPro catalogues the same card at the same number. Sellers treat it as the rookie: Frogger's House of Cards titles its listing '2009 Frankie Edgar vs Tyson Griffin UFC Topps Round 1 Rookie Card #60' and eBay lot titles call it an Edgar rookie. The counterweight is that 2009 Topps UFC cards carry no RC logo and SportsCardsPro's own 'Is Rookie Card' field for #60 reads 'No', which is why this is filed as a rookie by convention rather than a verified RC.

Edgar's first trading card, and one of the dual-subject fight cards that made up part of the Round 1 base set: it pairs him with Tyson Griffin, the opponent he beat by unanimous decision on his UFC debut at UFC 67 on 3 February 2007. Because Topps only picked up the UFC licence in 2009, this February 2009 release is the earliest Edgar cardboard of any kind — nothing exists from his 2005-2008 run through the Underground Combat League, Ring of Combat and his first four UFC fights. Collectors chasing it have to accept that it is a shared card rather than a solo portrait.

The dispute

Whether Edgar has a designated rookie card at all. SportsCardsPro's rookie data field reads 'No' for Round 1 #60, Round 2 #88, 2019 Topps UFC Chrome #4 and 2021 Panini Prizm UFC #158 alike, and 2009 Topps UFC printed no RC logo; dealers nonetheless advertise Round 1 #60 as the rookie card. TCDB, the usual source for an RC flag, could not be consulted, so no flag could be confirmed or ruled out.

Commonly misidentified

Sellers list the Round 1 #60 Gold, Silver /288 and Black /888 parallels as 'the rookie' when they are parallels of the same base card. Round 2 #88 is also sold as the rookie on the strength of being his first solo card, which it is — but it is not his first card.
