Why this is the earliest card

2010 Leaf MMA #88 is the earliest Alvarez card either reachable catalogue records, and Collectibles.com labels it 'Rookie Card'. It is recorded here as his earliest card rather than a true rookie card for two reasons: SportsCardsPro's rookie field for the same card reads 'No', and the product is unlicensed — Cardboard Connection describes 2010 Leaf MMA as the rebranded Razor MMA release, with no promotional licence, issued seven years into Alvarez's professional career and a year after he had already won a world title. TCDB, which is the archive's usual arbiter of RC flags, could not be consulted, so no third opinion was available. Nothing in the UFC-licensed catalogue carries an RC designation for him either: SportsCardsPro says 'No' for 2014 Topps UFC Bloodlines #3, 2016 Topps UFC Knockout #20 and 2018 Topps Chrome UFC #3 alike.

The earliest Eddie Alvarez card either source can show, and the only one issued while he was Bellator's lightweight champion. It comes from Leaf's unlicensed multi-promotion MMA set (originally announced as Razor MMA, released 22 September 2010), which is why it carries no Bellator or UFC marks even though Alvarez had held the inaugural Bellator lightweight title since June 2009. Commonly misidentified

Sellers routinely describe 2014 Topps UFC Bloodlines #3 as the Alvarez rookie because it is his first Topps card; it is his first UFC-licensed card, not his first card. Buyers should also watch the number 3, which Topps reused for him in 2018 Chrome — the two are unrelated cards from different products.
