Bas Rutten

Rutten's best years produced cardboard, but only in Japan: while he was King of Pancrase, BBM carded him at #114 in its 241-card 1995 Pro Wrestling set and then in dedicated Pancrase sets through 1998. American cardboard waits until he has retired — 2008 Donruss Americana II, out 15 July 2008, puts him in its MMA-dedicated Ring Kings subset at #RK-BR /500 and carries his first certified autograph at Ring Kings Signature #RK-BR /450. His first UFC-licensed card is 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #51, ten years after he won the heavyweight title, followed by a 2010 Knockout base and autograph, then fourteen years of nothing until Topps got the licence back in 2024 and put him in two legends autograph sets.

Rutten's first licensed card, printed in Japan while he was King of Pancrase and fourteen years before the Topps card the hobby usually calls his first. BBM's pro wrestling line opens in 1995 and covers the Japanese promotions of the day, Pancrase among them; #114 sits in a 241-card base set. A Rutten collection now starts here rather than at 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #51.

Commonly misidentified

2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #51 is itself the misidentification: eBay's catalogue flags it '(RC)' and sellers call it the Bas Rutten rookie, but it is his first UFC-licensed card and his fourth licensed card overall, behind 1995 BBM Pro Wrestling #114 and the two 2008 Donruss Americana II Ring Kings issues. The Round 2 Silver /188 and Ruby /8 get listed as 'the rookie' as well; they are parallels of #51. Because Round 1 and Round 2 shipped in the same year, listings also occasionally put him in Round 1 — the 2009 Topps UFC Round 1 checklist does not include him.

BBM's pro wrestling line begins in 1995 and nothing of him from 1993 or 1994 has been documented, so this is the earliest card of him on record. No published manufacturer checklist for the 1995 set has been located, which holds the confidence at probable.
  • 1995First MMA card — BBM's mid-1990s pro wrestling sets cover the Japanese promotions of the day, Pancrase included, and Rutten's only competitive career at the time was in Pancrase. Dedicated BBM Pancrase sets follow immediately: #183 in 1996, #133 in 1997 and #P19 in 1998 BBM Pancrase Hybrid Wrestling. Whether the 1995 issue or the 1996 dedicated Pancrase set counts as the first true MMA card is a matter of how a hybrid-wrestling promotion is classified.

The archive therefore records his earliest licensed card instead.

While he was running up three King of Pancrase reigns and a 22-fight unbeaten streak, BBM was carding him: #114 in the 241-card 1995 BBM Pro Wrestling set, catalogued by COMC and Cardbase, then dedicated Pancrase issues at #183 in 1996, #133 in 1997 and #P19 in 1998 BBM Pancrase Hybrid Wrestling. None of it is US-issued and none of it carries a rookie designation, which is how a Hall of Famer ends up with a card history that looks like it began a decade late. No published manufacturer checklist for the 1995 set has been located, so the numbering rests on catalogue entries and graded copies.

It is not where his signature enters the hobby: the Americana II Ring Kings Signature /450 beat it by more than two years, along with that card's Director's Cut /100, Signature Material /50 and Signature Material Prime /25 versions. Two base cards and one autograph is the entire Topps-era haul.

Then fourteen years of nothing. He is absent from 2010 Topps UFC Main Event, 2010 Leaf MMA Autographs, 2011 Topps UFC Title Shot and 2011 Topps UFC Moment of Truth, and nothing of his surfaces anywhere across the Panini UFC licence of 2021-2023. Even his 2015 induction into the UFC Hall of Fame's Pioneer wing went uncommemorated at the time.

Topps got the licence back for 2024 and went straight to the Hall. 2024 Topps Chrome UFC, released 20 March 2024, carries Hall of Fame Autographs #HFA-BRU at 1:50 hobby packs, with Refractor /150, Gold /50, Orange /25, Black /10, Red /5 and SuperFractor 1/1 tiers — his first chrome signature. 2024 Topps Royalty UFC, which actually shipped on 4 April 2025, added Golden Hall Autographs #GH-BR in a 19-card Hall of Fame subset where every version is serial numbered, the base at /99 and then Blue /25, Gold /10, Green /5 and Platinum 1/1. Both of his modern cards are legends autographs; he has had no new base card since 2010.

Topps follows a year later with 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #51, a portrait card in the 150-card base and his first UFC-licensed card, ten years after he won and vacated the heavyweight title. Knockout, and the first signature

December 2010's 150-card Topps UFC Knockout carries base #8 with a full parallel ladder (Gold /288, Silver /188, Green /88, Red /8, Octagon Mat 1/1) and, in the Fighter Autographs subset, #A-BR — his first UFC-licensed certified signature, with a Red Ink /15 and a Mat 1/1. His signature had already reached cardboard two years earlier, on the Americana II Ring Kings Signature /450.

2011–2023
Off the checklists

He is absent from 2011 Topps UFC Title Shot, 2011 Topps UFC Moment of Truth, 2010 Topps UFC Main Event, 2010 Topps UFC and 2010 Leaf MMA Autographs, and no card of his has been documented anywhere across the Panini UFC licence (2021–2023). His 2015 UFC Hall of Fame induction produced no card at the time.

2024
Topps returns and goes to the Hall

Both of his modern cards are legends autographs from Topps' first year back: 2024 Topps Chrome UFC Hall of Fame Autographs #HFA-BRU (20 March 2024, refractor tiers down to a SuperFractor 1/1) and 2024 Topps Royalty UFC Golden Hall Autographs #GH-BR /99, a 19-card set that actually shipped on 4 April 2025.
