No manufacturer or authority designates any Bas Rutten card a rookie, so the pick comes down to which card is genuinely first. That is 1995 BBM Pro Wrestling #114, catalogued by COMC and Cardbase in a 241-card Japanese set printed while he was King of Pancrase, with dedicated BBM Pancrase issues following in 1996 (#183), 1997 (#133) and 1998 (#P19). 2008 Donruss Americana II Ring Kings #RK-BR /500, released 15 July 2008, is his first American card and the first to carry his signature. 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #51, long treated here as his rookie, is neither: it is his first UFC-licensed card and nothing more. On the usual hobby reading that a fighter's rookie is his first licensed card, the BBM issue is the pick, with the caveat that no published manufacturer checklist for the 1995 set has been located.

2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #51 is itself the misidentification: eBay's catalogue flags it '(RC)' and sellers call it the Bas Rutten rookie, but it is his first UFC-licensed card and his fourth licensed card overall, behind 1995 BBM Pro Wrestling #114 and the two 2008 Donruss Americana II Ring Kings issues. The Round 2 Silver /188 and Ruby /8 get listed as 'the rookie' as well; they are parallels of #51. Because Round 1 and Round 2 shipped in the same year, listings also occasionally put him in Round 1 — the 2009 Topps UFC Round 1 checklist does not include him.
