Why this is the working pick

2017 Topps UFC Knockout #88 is the earliest Alexa Grasso card any reachable source records, and it is a UFC-licensed Topps issue released 10 May 2017 — four months before 2017 Topps UFC Chrome. Cardboard Connection's 2017 Topps UFC Knockout page gives the 10 May 2017 date, a 100-card base set and Grasso at #88; SportsCardsPro carries the same card as 'Alexa Grasso #88, 2017 Topps UFC Knockout'. Collectibles.com states flatly that 'Alexa Grasso debuted as a Rookie in 2017' and lists nothing earlier, and Sports Card Investor's guide starts at 2017 Topps Chrome UFC. Nothing exists from the Invicta years to displace it.

Her first card, six months after her UFC debut and four and a half years into her pro career — there is nothing from the Invicta run to compete with it. Released 10 May 2017 in a 100-card base set, it beats the better-known Chrome #85 to market by four months, which is why date-order collectors call this the rookie even though the Chrome is what trades.

The dispute

Two things are unsettled. First, which 2017 card is 'the' rookie: Knockout #88 is first by release date, but the market treats 2017 Topps UFC Chrome #85 as the rookie and eBay titles call both 'RC'. Second, whether a printed RC logo exists on either. SportsCardsPro's data field for Knockout #88 reads 'Is Rookie Card: No', while eBay listing titles read '2017 Topps UFC Knockout ALEXA GRASSO RC Rookie Base Card No 88' and '2017 Topps UFC Chrome ALEXA GRASSO #85 Green Refractor RC /99'. TCDB, normally the arbiter of RC flags for MMA, is not reachable, so the flag could not be checked.

Commonly misidentified

Chrome #85 refractor parallels are routinely sold as 'the rookie' when they are parallels of the same card. Listings also present privately signed Chrome #85 cards with a Beckett or PSA authentication COA as autograph rookies — they are not certified issues and should not be confused with #MA-AG.

Identifying it

  • Base card #88 in the 100-card 2017 Topps UFC Knockout set
  • The base card is unnumbered; every parallel is serial numbered, so an unnumbered copy is the base
  • Green /215, Blue /99, Red /25 and Gold 1/1 are the only base parallels in the product
  • Grasso is a strawweight here — this predates her 2020 move to flyweight
