Why this is the rookie

2015 Topps UFC Champions #64 is Whittaker's first card and his rookie, with no second candidate. MMA Rookies names it his True Rookie Card and lists no others; Collectibles.com's register puts his rookie year at 2015; Cardboard Connection's checklist confirms #64 in the 200-card base set released 28 October 2015, and he is absent from the 2014 Champions and 2014 Bloodlines checklists that came before it. The only thing missing is a printed rookie logo — the 2015 Topps UFC Champions checklist marks no card RC — which is why this sits at high rather than verified.

Whittaker's first card of any kind, and it came nearly three years after his UFC debut: he won The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes in December 2012 but Topps skipped him through the whole 2013-2014 Bloodlines/Knockout/Champions run. 2015 Topps UFC Champions was released 28 October 2015, by which time he had moved to middleweight and put together the win streak that made him champion. It is the only card most price guides treat as his rookie, which makes it the single card a Whittaker collection has to start with.

Commonly misidentified

SportsCardsPro's structured 'Rookie Card' field reads 'No' for #64, which contradicts MMA Rookies and Collectibles.com. That field reads 'No' across most of its UFC catalogue and is a gap in the database rather than a competing opinion. No independent confirmation of a printed RC logo on the card front has been found either, so the rookie call rests on the two hobby sources rather than on the card itself. Sellers also list the Gold /25 and Red /8 parallels of #64 as 'the rookie'; they are parallels of the one base card.

Identifying it

  • Card #64 in a 200-card base set
  • 2015 Topps UFC Champions design with the belt-plate 'CHAMPIONS' logo
  • Base card is unnumbered; only the Black/Blue/Gold/Red tiers carry a serial stamp
  • Photographed at welterweight-era billing; nameplate reads 'ROBERT WHITTAKER'

What gets mistaken for it

What you'll readWhat's true
Whittaker has a 2013 rookie card because he won TUF: The Smashes in December 2012.He is absent from 2013 Topps UFC Bloodlines, 2013 Topps UFC Knockout, 2014 Topps UFC Champions and 2016 Topps UFC Knockout / Museum Collection. His first card is the 2015 Champions #64.
SportsCardsPro says 'Rookie Card: No', so #64 is not his RC.That field is blank-by-default across most of SportsCardsPro's UFC catalogue. MMA Rookies and Collectibles.com both put his rookie year at 2015.

Card milestones

Five separate questions, kept separate. How these are defined.

The evidence behind each
  • 2015Earliest licensed card — Cardboard Connection's checklist places him at #64 in the 200-card base set. He appears in none of the checklists for 2014 Topps UFC Champions (17 September 2014) or 2014 Topps UFC Bloodlines (17 December 2014), and MMA Rookies and Collectibles.com both start him in 2015.
  • 2015First MMA card — Same card — the earliest Whittaker card identified, in a UFC-licensed Topps product.
  • 2015First UFC card — Cardboard Connection checklist; nothing earlier appears on any list consulted despite his December 2012 UFC debut.
  • 2021First certified autograph — Cardboard Connection lists '24 Robert Whittaker - Middleweight' in Octagon Signatures. He appears in no autograph checklist in 2015 Topps UFC Champions, 2017 Topps UFC Chrome or 2017 Topps UFC Museum Collection, the earlier products that carry him as a base card.
  • 2015Recognized rookie card — MMA Rookies names it his True Rookie Card and records no other rookies; Collectibles.com's register states he 'debuted as a Rookie in 2015'; Cardboard Connection confirms it is his only 2015 card.

High confidence

Robert Whittaker's rookie card: 2015 Topps UFC Champions #64 — Robert Whittaker.

MMA Rookies' vault entry names '2015 Topps UFC Champions #64 Robert Whittaker' as his True Rookie Card and lists no other rookies. Collectibles.com's register states Whittaker 'debuted as a Rookie in 2015'. Cardboard Connection's 2015 Topps UFC Champions checklist independently confirms he is card #64 in the 200-card base set, released 28 October 2015. Spot checks of the earlier licensed products found nothing: no Whittaker in 2013 Topps UFC Bloodlines, 2013 Topps UFC Knockout, 2014 Topps UFC Champions, 2016 Topps UFC Knockout or 2016 Topps UFC Museum Collection. There is therefore no gap between 'earliest card' and 'rookie card' for him - #64 is both.

High confidence

Uncertain

The parallel ladder above is the product-wide structure Cardboard Connection gives for 2015 Topps UFC Champions (one parallel per pack: Silver, Black /188, Blue /88, Gold /25, Red /8, Platinum 1/1). SportsCardsPro's page for #64 lists no parallel rows at all, so the existence of each specific tier for this card number is inferred from the product, not individually confirmed.
