Why this is the working pick

Collectibles.com states outright that 'Dan Henderson debuted as a Rookie in 2006', and the only 2006 product carrying him is the Japanese Pride FC set, where both Collectibles.com (Gold Foil Signature #132) and Cardbase (#132) place him. WorthPoint's description of the same set confirms it was 'released by Pride FC, a Japanese organization', sold in packs in Japan and issued 'several years before the UFC Topps Round 1 series', which makes it the first licensed cardboard of a career that began in 1997. No earlier card of any kind — Olympic, wrestling or MMA — surfaced on any reachable source. The caveat is that the set prints no RC logo and the base card number is not settled: Sports Card Investor lists his base card as #35 while two other sources say #132.

Henderson turned professional in June 1997 and had already won the UFC 17 middleweight tournament, fought in PRIDE for five years and taken the PRIDE welterweight belt off Murilo Bustamante before a single licensed card of him existed. This Japanese-issue Pride FC card is that card. It is also the honest answer to a common assumption: his cardboard does not start with Topps, it starts with a set sold in packs in Japan that most US collectors have never opened.

The dispute

The rookie year (2006, Pride FC) rests on a single explicit statement from Collectibles.com plus the absence of anything earlier; no source prints an RC designation because the set carries none. Within that set, sources disagree on his base card number: Collectibles.com and Cardbase say #132, Sports Card Investor says #35.

Commonly misidentified

Sellers routinely describe the 2009 Topps UFC Round 1 #6 or Round 2 #67 cards as 'the Hendo rookie' because they are his first Topps cards. They are his first UFC-licensed cards, not his first cards. Separately, he is card #77 in both 2011 Topps UFC Moment of Truth and 2012 Topps Finest UFC, so a bare '#77 Dan Henderson' listing does not identify the set.

Identifying it

  • Base set of 142 cards; Cardbase counts 583 cards across all variations
  • Variations run Gold Foil Signature (141 cards), Silver Foil Signature (141) and Holographic (140) — a foil facsimile signature across the photo is the quickest tell
  • Ten promo cards numbered PR-1 to PR-10 were not packed out: per WorthPoint they went only to large-volume dealers and industry insiders in Japan
  • Set is PRIDE-licensed and Japanese-issued; checklist is heavy with DSE-era names (Fedor Emelianenko, Wanderlei Silva, Anderson Silva, Mark Hunt, Josh Barnett)
