Why this is the rookie

This is Bisping's first card of any kind, from Topps' first UFC-licensed product, and Collectibles.com's card register now supplies an actual rookie-card designation on this exact card rather than the seller titles the entry previously rested on. Like the rest of the Round 1 base run it is a shared bout card, pairing him with Josh Haynes from the TUF 3 Finale. Some collectors prefer the solo 2009 Topps UFC Round 2 #43 for that reason, but it was released about seven months later and no database designates it the rookie.

Bisping's first card of any kind, in Topps' first UFC-licensed product. Like the rest of the Round 1 base run it is a 'UFC Debut' card, so it commemorates the TUF 3 Finale on 24 June 2006 where he stopped Josh Haynes to win the light heavyweight tournament — the fight that started the whole career. It is the card most of the market treats as his rookie, though it shares the front with Haynes.

Commonly misidentified

The Silver /288 and Gold parallels of #42 get listed as 'the rookie card' without the parallel name; the base card is unnumbered. Listings also sometimes call the Victorious Debuts #VD11 Gold /88 a rookie card — it is an insert.

Michael Bisping's rookie card: 2009 Topps UFC Round 1 #42 — Michael Bisping / Josh Haynes.

2009 Topps UFC Round 1 is Topps' first UFC-licensed product and the first set of any kind to carry Bisping. Card #42 is his entry in Round 1's 'UFC Debut' base run, sharing the card with Josh Haynes because Bisping's UFC debut was the TUF 3 Finale win over Haynes on 24 June 2006. Sellers and graders list it as a rookie card — the eBay listings for the base and the Gold parallel both read 'Rookie Card' — and it predates Round 2 by roughly seven months, Round 1 having shipped in February 2009 and Round 2 in the autumn.

The Gold parallel's print run is not printed on the card. The seller of the graded Gold copy states the Golds are 'widely accepted to be limited to just 432 ever made' but concedes they are not individually numbered, unlike the Silver /288. Treat 432 as hobby lore, not a confirmed print run. A Red 1/1 tier is recorded for other Round 1 subjects but is not separately confirmed for #42.
