José Aldo

Aldo's cards start in late 2010, the WEC–UFC merger window: he appears in both 2010 Leaf MMA (#83, September) and 2010 Topps UFC Knockout (#120, December), and TCDB flags both as rookies even though Topps' own Ripped blog points to 2011 Finest. The licensed Topps Knockout base and its numbered Silver/Gold/Green/Red parallels are the core of any Aldo run, with the /188 Knockout autographs as his first Topps signatures. After that, 2017 Topps Chrome UFC #2 is the modern refractor card to own.

2010 Topps UFC Knockout #120

Aldo's first licensed UFC card, in Topps' first high-end UFC product, released in December 2010 during the WEC–UFC merger. It is the base card behind a well-structured numbered parallel rainbow.

Where sources disagree

TCDB flags both 2010 Topps UFC Knockout #120 and 2010 Leaf MMA #83 as RC. Topps Ripped names 2011 Finest UFC #95 as the rookie. SportsCardsPro does not mark #120 or #83 as rookie cards. Leaf #83 was released first.

Commonly misidentified

Autographs get sold as rookies: eBay listings title the 2010 Leaf MMA AU-JA1 autograph 'RC Auto … Rookie 1st Autograph', but it is a rookie-year autograph, not an RC-flagged card; the 2010 Topps UFC Knockout A-JA /188 autograph is likewise a rookie-year signature, not the RC. Leaf's Champions (CH-JA1) and National Pride (NP-JA1) autographs are different cards from AU-JA1.

Card history

Aldo's cardboard starts in 2010. Leaf's unlicensed 2010 MMA set (released 22 September 2010) had base #83 and the AU, Champions and National Pride autographs. Topps then put him in 2010 Topps UFC Knockout (December 2010), where TCDB flags #120 RC; it carries the WEC logo. Knockout also had his Fighter Autograph /188, relic autographs and three-fighter autograph and memorabilia combos.

Topps' chromium Finest line followed. Topps Ripped describes 2011 Finest UFC as 'Aldo's first appearance as UFC fighter' in cards, and 2012 Finest added an autograph whose Octafractor version is numbered to 8. The 2017 Topps Chrome UFC #2 and its Gold Refractor /50 come from the same Topps run.

When Panini took the UFC licence in 2021, Aldo appeared across its first-year products. Cardboard Connection lists him in 2021 Prizm as base #111 and in the Signatures and Knockout Artists inserts. TCDB shows 2021 Chronicles autographs (Tools of the Trade, Crown Royale, National Pride, Origins) and Immaculate autographs numbered to 99 or less.

Topps Ripped's June 2024 guide, written after Topps regained the UFC licence, notes Aldo's 2023 UFC Hall of Fame induction and his 2024 return to competition. It picks a 2024 Topps Midnight UFC 'Stroke of Midnight' autograph as his current-era card.

FightCardboard's working pick is the Topps card because it is UFC-licensed and comes from Topps' first high-end UFC product (Cardboard Connection). eBay sellers routinely list #120 and its Gold /288 parallel as 'Rookie RC'. Leaf #83 came out first (September 2010 vs December 2010), so it has a real claim to be his first card. Topps' own Ripped blog instead names 2011 Finest UFC #95 as his rookie, calling it his first appearance as a UFC fighter.
